The panel discussion will cover the highlights of the 56th Annual Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning that was held virtually from March 28 – April 1, 2022. The presentation will cover recent estate planning developments as well as a summary of the more important sessions during the week-long virtual program.

Joseph (Jay) B. Darby III

Joseph (“Jay”) B. Darby III has more than thirty years of experience representing clients in a wide range of tax, estate planning, and related business matters. His goal is to help clients enjoy their lives by reducing taxes, avoiding (or resolving) problems with taxing authorities, and passing personal wealth to the appropriate next destination. Jay's clients range from individuals to large public and private business entities, and while he has structured some of the most sophisticated transactions in the business arena, he is mindful of the fact that people rather than businesses ultimately pay taxes. Therefore, he always structures transactions with the goal of minimizing the tax costs and maximizing the after-tax return for the people he represents. An early proponent of Opportunity Zones (an investment incentive created under the 2017 Tax Act), Jay has become one of the country’s go-to experts in the area, helping clients bring business investment and ultimately prosperity to some of the most challenged areas of the country.Jay is the author of a highly acclaimed treatise, Practical Guide to Mergers, Acquisitions and Business Sales (click here to purchase). He has written more than 1,000 articles on tax, business, and a diverse range of other topics. He teaches numerous advanced tax courses at Boston University School of Law's Graduate Tax Program, and has taught regularly at Boston College Law School and Bentley College (in the Masters of Taxation program). He is a popular speaker on the national tax conference and webinar circuit, lecturing regularly on a wide range of topics. He is also the founder and principal host of the OZoom Forum, a video-conferencing platform sponsored by Boston University School of Law that provides a venue for sharing information and ideas about Opportunity Zones and related subjects.Jay’s many awards and honors include being recognized in the area of tax practice by Best Lawyers in America®, being recognized for his achievements in Legal 500 U.S., being named a “Top 25 Opportunity Zone Influencer” by Opportunity Zone Expo Magazine, and receiving an AV Preeminent®, Martindale-Hubbell® Peer Review Rating™. Jay was a partner at some of the largest and most prestigious law firms in the country, including Greenberg Traurig LLP and Holland & Knight LLP, before founding his own firm, Joseph Darby Law PC.

Jeremiah W. Doyle, IV, Esq.

Jere Doyle is an estate planning strategist for BNY Mellon's Private Wealth Management group and a Senior Vice President of Bank of New York Mellon. Jere is admitted to practice law in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and before the United States District Court, United States Court of Appeals (First Circuit) and the United States Tax Court. He formerly served as a member of the Massachusetts Joint Bar Committee on Judicial Appointments. He is a co-author of the law school casebook The Income Taxation of Trusts and Estates published by Carolina Academic Press. He is the editor and co-author of Preparing Fiduciary Income Tax Returns, a contributing author of Preparing Estate Tax Returns, a contributing author of Understanding and Using Trusts, and a contributing author of Drafting Irrevocable Trusts in Massachusetts, all published by Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education. He is also a reviewing editor of the 1041 Deskbook published by Practitioner’s Publishing Company.

Jere is an adjunct professor of law in the Graduate Tax Program at Boston University School of Law. Jere received a LL.M. in banking law from Boston University Law School, a LL.M. in taxation from Boston University Law School, a Juris Doctor from Hamline University Law School and a BS in accounting from Providence College. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC). He served as president of the Boston Estate Planning Council and formerly served as a member of its Executive Committee and was a 20-year member of the Executive Committee of the Essex County Bar Association. He was named as the “Estate Planner of the Year” in 2009 by the Boston Estate Planning Council.

Judith A. Saxe AEP®, CAP®

Judith Saxe is the director of research and education for wealth strategies and a senior wealth strategist at CIBC Private Wealth. In this role, she leads firm-wide educational initiatives related to the work of the Wealth Strategies Group, including estate, gift, philanthropic, business succession, fiduciary and legacy planning. She also works collaboratively with clients and their advisors to create integrated estate plans and guide client families with evolving a healthy wealth culture and developing the rising generation, all as part of CIBC Private Wealth Management’s integrated wealth management process.

Judith has over 30 years of industry experience counseling high net worth individuals, corporate executives, owners of closely held businesses and multinationals on sophisticated estate planning designs and strategies. She joined the firm in 2003 from Ernst & Young LLP, where she was the New England-area director of estate and business succession planning. Previously, Judith practiced law with a specialty in estate planning at major firms in New York City. More recently, she served on the board of directors of the National Association of Estate Planning Councils (NAEPC), following an 11-year tenure on the executive committee and board of directors of The Boston Estate Planning Council (BEPC), where she was named as president from 2013-2014. BEPC is one of the nation’s largest and most prestigious interdisciplinary estate planning councils, with over 700 members in the greater Boston community. She continues to be active with these organizations. In addition to presenting on a range of wealth strategies-related topics, Judith has also written articles for or been quoted in national and local publications, including The Wall Street Journal, Private Wealth magazine and Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly. She has also chaired or been a panelist for numerous programs, including for Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education (MCLE), the Massachusetts Bar Association and BEPC, and is a contributor to several MCLE treatises.

Judith earned a Bachelor of Arts with honors from Harvard University and a Juris Doctor from the New York University School of Law. In addition to these degrees, in 2008 she was awarded the Accredited Estate Planner® (AEP®) designation by NAEPC in recognition of both her experience in and her interdisciplinary approach to estate planning, and in 2018, she obtained the Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy® (CAP®) designation through the American College of Financial Services.
